Multi-Employer Benefit Plans

Multi-employer plans are a Canadian institution.

Unlike benefit programs that are sponsored and controlled by employers for their own employees, multi-employer plans are essentially benefit programs sponsored and administered by boards of trustees made up of both labor and management, representing participants from many organizations.

Multi-employer programs serve a unique function by providing retirement, supplemental health care, disability and other welfare benefits to workers who might otherwise have no access to such benefits: those who move from employer to employer, are independent of any single employer or who work for small companies that are otherwise unable to offer such benefits.

Relationships are built on trust.

At Segal, we know trust is critical to achieving success – between members and their unions, between workers and employers, between trustees and their advisors, between our people and yours.

We don't take this trust lightly. Since our founding we've stood firmly rooted in a tradition as trusted advisors, focusing our resources on responding to your needs with the best that we have. We work with labor and management to determine the best options for the benefit program and its participants. That's how problems get solved: by working together with people you trust to create lasting solutions.

Segal is a unique consulting firm.

Successfully consulting to multi-employer boards of trustees requires a consulting firm skilled in labor-management issues. It requires consultants who are focused on, and experienced in, serving the complex needs of all the parties involved with multi-employer plans.

Our Multi-employer Leadership Group brings together a select team of our leading consultants who have more than 150 years of combined experience serving multi-employer benefit programs. This select group of senior consultants focuses on identifying multi-employer needs, meeting regularly to discuss emerging developments and issues in the multi-employer environment, and sharing knowledge of best practices with all of our consultants. This unique perspective shapes our consulting advice and enables us to deliver solutions that have the best opportunity for creating long-term success for all our clients.

Each of our practices has national leadership and a full-time staff. They create new approaches and develop publications, surveys, seminars and workshops devoted to multi-employer concerns focusing on current and emerging issues that may affect your plans. Of special note is our Compliance Practice that can help clients and their fund counsel sort out the impact of current and pending laws and regulations on multi-employer benefit plans.

Having an objective consulting approach means we have no stake in providing answers tied to products or pre-packaged solutions. While we draw on the resources and knowledge of the entire firm in our consulting assignments, our advice and guidance is tailored to the particular needs and circumstances of each client. By investing our resources and developing our expertise based on the current and emerging needs of our many multiemployer clients, we have a long track record of creating durable, innovative and flexible solutions.
