Mr. Olsen is a Senior Vice President and Consulting Actuary in Segal’s Toronto office with over 30 years of consulting experience. Mr. Olsen is an expert in the design, administration and valuation of pension plans. He serves as a Consulting Actuary and Client Relationship Manager for a number of large pension plan sponsors and leads Segal’s Canadian team on defined benefit plan de-risking.

Mr. Olsen’s clients include:

  • Canada’s largest defense contractor
  • Max Aicher North America
  • Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd.
  • Unifor
  • Nortel Retirees Protection Canada (NRPC)

In his work for NRPC, he successfully championed an innovative alternative to the purchase of annuities for the non-profit organization, resulting in potentially significantly greater payments to the 20,000 pensioners and necessitating a change to Ontario law. Mr. Olsen also has valuable experience as the Client Relationship Manager for a number of multi-employer pension plans.

Prior to joining Segal, Mr. Olsen held a number of senior leadership positions in the pension industry. He was one of the three founding partners of an actuarial practice that evolved into a firm with pension-related consulting revenue that ranked it as one of the 10 largest in Canada.

Mr. Olsen graduated with Honours from the University of Waterloo in Ontario in 1983, where he received a Descartes Scholarship. He became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in 1986 and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries in 1987.

Mr. Olsen participates in many professional activities of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries. In 2002, he received the Canadian Institute of Actuaries’ Award for Volunteer Service in recognition of his contribution to the actuarial profession in Canada. Mr. Olsen actively participates in the Multinational Group of Actuaries and Consultants (MGAC), where he has gained international recognition as a frequent speaker at their Global Pensions conference in the U.K.
